What 24K Gold Is and What 999 Fine Means

24K gold is 99.9% pure, marked "999" or "24K". Some bars and coins refine to 99.99% and carry a "9999" mark, a difference worth a fraction of a percent. Because there is almost no alloy, 24K carries the full spot price per gram, and its melt value calculation is the simplest of any karat: weight in grams times the live per-gram price above.

Bars: A Premium When You Buy, Melt When You Sell

Retail gold bars sell above melt value. Dealers charge a premium that runs roughly 2% to 8% over spot, and the smaller the bar, the larger the percentage premium, since fabrication costs are fixed per bar. A 1 gram bar carries the steepest markup per gram; a kilo bar carries the thinnest. When you sell a bar back, expect a price at or slightly below melt. That spread is the dealer's margin, and it is why the melt figures in the table above are the honest baseline for any bar transaction, buying or selling.

Which Coins Are 24K and Which Are Not

The American Gold Buffalo, Canadian Maple Leaf, Austrian Philharmonic, and modern British Britannia are struck in 24K. The American Gold Eagle and South African Krugerrand are 22K, though each still contains a full troy ounce of pure gold with alloy added on top. Live figures for every major coin are on our US gold coin melt values and world gold coin melt values pages.

Why 24K Jewelry Is Rare in the US

Pure gold is soft. It bends, scratches, and loses shape under daily wear, which is why American jewelers work in 10K through 18K. 24K jewelry is common in East Asia, where Chinese chuk kam pieces are sold by weight at close to the daily gold rate. If you own 24K jewelry, its value is nearly all metal: weigh it, multiply by the per-gram price above, and you have the number.
