What 10K Gold Is and What the 417 Stamp Means
10K gold contains 41.7% pure gold. The remaining 58.3% is an alloy of copper, silver, zinc, or nickel. Jewelers stamp 10K pieces with "10K", "417", or "416" inside the band or on the clasp. The number 417 refers to 417 parts gold per 1,000. 10K is the minimum karat that can legally be sold as gold in the United States, and it is the hardest common gold alloy, which makes it a frequent choice for class rings, everyday chains, and jewelry built to take a beating.
Solid vs Hollow 10K: Weigh It, Don't Eyeball It
A large share of 10K chains and bracelets are hollow. A hollow Cuban link can look identical to a solid one at a third of the weight, and melt value follows the scale, not the appearance. Before you estimate what a 10K chain is worth, put it on a gram scale. Our guide on how to weigh gold at home covers the right scale and the units buyers use.
How to Judge an Offer on Your 10K Gold
Melt value is your baseline. Weigh your item in grams, multiply by the live per-gram price above, and you have the number every offer should be measured against. Because 10K has the lowest gold content of the common karats, lowball offers hide more easily here than anywhere else. A pawn shop offering 50% of melt is normal for a quick sale. A gold buyer offering 85% is strong. Anything under 40% deserves a walk out the door. Get at least three quotes and bring the melt figure with you.
Common 10K Item Weights
Class rings are the classic 10K item and run 10 to 20 grams, which puts many of them worth hundreds of dollars in gold content alone. Men's rings run 5 to 12 grams. Solid chains range from 10 to 40 grams or more, while hollow versions of the same styles often weigh under 10 grams. Weigh each piece separately if you hold mixed karats, since a 10K ring and a 14K chain carry different per-gram values.
