Morgan Dollar Specifications

The Morgan dollar, designed by George T. Morgan, was struck from 1878 to 1904 and again in 1921. Each coin weighs 26.73 grams, measures 38.1mm across, and uses a 90% silver, 10% copper alloy. That works out to 0.7734 troy ounces of pure silver per coin. The Mint revived the design in 2021 with a .999 fine silver version containing 0.858 troy ounces, so a modern Morgan carries more silver than a classic one.

Why Most Morgans Sell Above Melt

Melt value sets the floor for a Morgan dollar, and the market rarely lets one sell at the floor. Collector demand keeps even worn common dates a few dollars above melt. Carson City coins, better dates like the 1893-S and 1889-CC, and uncirculated examples trade on collector value with no real connection to the silver price. Before selling any Morgan at melt, check the date and mint mark against a price guide. The mint mark sits on the reverse, below the wreath and above the letters DO in DOLLAR.

Selling Morgan Dollars

For a bag of common circulated Morgans, expect offers a few dollars per coin above the melt value shown here. Never clean a Morgan before selling. Cleaning strips the original surface and can cut a coin's collector value in half or worse. Sort by date and mint mark, pull anything from Carson City or the tougher dates, and sell the rest by count against the live melt figure.
