Why Gold Is Priced Per Troy Ounce
Gold prices on international markets are quoted in US dollars per troy ounce. A troy ounce equals 31.1035 grams — about 10% heavier than a standard (avoirdupois) ounce of 28.3495 grams. This distinction matters: if you weigh gold on a kitchen scale that reads in standard ounces and use the spot price directly, you'll overestimate the value by about 10%. Always convert to grams first for accuracy, or use the per-gram prices in the table above.
The troy system dates back to the trading fairs of Troyes, France in the Middle Ages and has been the standard for precious metals for centuries. Every gold exchange — London, New York, Shanghai — uses troy ounces. When you see gold quoted as a single dollar figure, that number is the price for one troy ounce of pure (24K) gold.
